Yeonggwang Beopseongpodan-o Festival is a time-honored folk festival with a history and tradition of 500 years, starting from the mid-Joseon Dynasty. Since ancient times, Beopseongpo, where fishing has been the main focus, has held rites to pray for safety and well-being to the mountain god of humanity, and has held a rite for the king of the sea to pray for full ships.
In addition, the skills of talented people who truly received pansori and catch through the Forestjaeng Gugak Contest were recognized anywhere in the country. In this way, the Beopseongpodan-oje Festival, which has continued its long history and tradition, has established itself as a representative traditional cultural festival in Korea with the Nanjang-tgi, Yongwangje, Seonyu-nori, and Forestjaeng Gugak Contest designated as important national intangible cultural assets in 2012. It is held every year around Dano on May 5 of the lunar calendar, and not only events designated as important national intangible cultural properties, but also wrestling competitions, folk games, celebratory performances, and various experience events are held. With the successful holding of the festival, we seek to promote the succession and development of traditional culture and arts by recalling the spirit of our ancestors in Dano.
