The waterway of art embroidered in Hongjecheon, Seoul Hongjeyuyeon (newly opened tourist destination)

Yujin Arcade, located at Hongeun Intersection in Seodaemun-gu, is a building that shared the pain of our modern history. In 1970, it was built on the site where Hongjecheon was covered, with a width of 50m and a length of 200m. At a time when military tensions between the two Koreas were at their peak, it was designed with the purpose of anti-tank defense in preparation for a North invasion of the South in case of emergency. In 1992, one side of the building was cut off due to the construction of the inner ring road, and candidates in Seodaemun-gu pledged to demolish the Yujin Shopping Center in each election for members of the National Assembly. The underground section of Yujin Shopping Center, where Hongjecheon flows, was a controlled area. Among them, the 250m section was born as ‘Hongjeyuyeon’ on July 1 of this year through the ‘Seoul is an Art Museum’ project, a public art project in Seoul. Eight works of art, including installation art, lighting art, media art, and sound art, are installed along the waterway flowing between the 100 pillars that support the building of Yujin Shopping Center, creating a fantastic atmosphere. Hongjeyuyeon (弘濟流緣), which means ‘the connection between water and people flows and heals and harmonizes through art’, is open from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm (all year round), and there is no admission fee.
