Wonju is famous for Chiaksan National Park, Gangwon Gamyeong, and Hanji, but you can’t miss out on exploring the abandoned temple site. Near the Namhangang River, there are several abandoned temple sites built during the Silla Dynasty, such as Heungbeopsaji, Geodonsaji, and Beopcheonsaji, which disappeared during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. The three temples are famous temples where the Goryeo Dynasty’s king’s teacher, State Preceptor, stayed. Although the building has disappeared, pagodas and stele remain, conveying the scale of the old temple and the beauty of Goryeo Buddhist art. If you are interested in the abandoned temple site, I recommend you to look back and compare the tower and the tower in chronological order of production. Geodonsaji is the best for the quiet atmosphere of the abandoned temple site. Heungbeopsa Temple Site is still empty, and the entire Beopcheonsa Temple Site is under excavation. Geodonsaji has been excavated and restored, so it is clear, tidy, and gentle. It is also proud of its zelkova tree, which is said to be over 1000 years old and ‘lives on stones’. Let’s rest for a while under the shade and catch our breath. After touring the abandoned temple site, it is captured at Heungwonchang. Gyeonggi-do, Chungcheong-do, and Gangwon-do face each other across the Namhan River. The sunset coloring the river and mountains is beautiful.
