It was once an industrial site full of machine sounds. At that time, the name was Samcheok Tanjwa Jeongam Mining Office. After opening in 1964, miners’ blood and sweat led Korea’s rapid growth for decades. However, production decreased due to the government’s coal industry rationalization policy, and it eventually closed in 2001. In 2013, the former Samcheok Tanjwa Jeongam Mining Office was reborn as ‘Samtan Art Mine’, a complex cultural art complex with 100,000 art pieces collected from 150 countries. It won the ‘Korea Public Design Award’ that year with a unique design concept that preserves existing industrial facilities and adds the scent of art. It was listed as one of the 100 must-visit tours in Korea. Samtan Art Mine is open from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm (closed on Mondays), and the admission fee is 13,000 won for adults, 11,000 won for middle and high school students, and 10,000 won for elementary school students. Jeongseon Hwaam Cave (Natural Monument) is a place where a gold mine developed during the Japanese colonial period and a natural cave are harmonized. Fantastic sights continue in the open section decorated with the theme of ‘Meeting Gold and Mother Nature’. Najeon Station is a simple station known for its beauty. At the end of last year, ‘Korea’s first simple station cafe’ opened and many people visit it. On weekends, you can buy special products such as gondre, astragalus, deodeok, and potatoes at Jeongseon Arirang Market, which is crowded with tourists.
