Bucheon Art Bunker B39 is a complex cultural space located in Ojeong-gu, Bucheon-si, and was originally the ‘Samjeong-dong Incinerator’. The incinerator, which opened in 1995, was closed in 2010 after environmental destruction issues were raised continuously since the dioxin scandal in 1997. After several years of construction, the closed incinerator was reborn as the new complex cultural space ‘Bucheon Art Bunker B39’ in 2018. It is characterized by preserving the structure of the old incinerator while also having various art spaces such as a multimedia hall, bunker, and air gallery. Currently, Bucheon Art Bunker B39 hosts exhibitions of modern art pursuing convergence art, as well as events and performances themed on the environment. It has established itself as Bucheon’s representative complex cultural space.
Bucheon has more examples of restoring the legacy of rapid urbanization. Simgokcheon, which was restored in the 1980s, was reborn as a green space in the city center through an ecological restoration project in 2017. If you want to see Bucheon’s artistic sensibility, head to the Lennoburg Museum. It is an exhibition hall that showcases large-scale media art works.
