The sunrise on Baengnyeong Island, the northernmost island in the West Sea, is sacred. I feel like I can touch the northern land, and my heart is pounding. Baengnyeongdo Sunrise is when the sun rises in Jangyeon-gun, Hwanghae-do, across the sea. It is not very common in South Korea to see the sun rising over North Korea. The places facing the sunrise on Baengnyeong Island are the eastern regions of the island, such as Yonggiwonsan Mountain and Yonggipo. Yonggiwonsan Mountain is a point where you can witness not only the sunrise but also the sunset over the island. Baengnyeongdo has bad winter weather, so it takes time to appreciate the sunrise at the northernmost part of the West Sea. The supporting characters that make the New Year’s sunrise trip to Baengnyeong Island even more fruitful are the unique rocks and beaches. Dumujin, which is called ‘Haegeumgang of the West Sea’, is famous for its strangely shaped rocks, and Sagot Sabin is registered as a natural monument. It takes four hours by sea from Incheon to Baengnyeong Island.
