The 18th century, the latter half of the Joseon Dynasty, was the period of literary revival when various cultures blossomed. The pinnacle of literary revival was the time of King Jeongjo, who loved culture and touched the lives of the people. Jeongjo put his dream in Suwon Hwaseong. He wanted to create a new city that could strengthen the royal authority by leaving the party and the servants who had power. Now, more than 200 years later, Suwon Hwaseong Fortress (Historic Site No. 3) has become a cultural heritage that attracts worldwide attention while containing the dream of King Jeongjo. The 5.7km-long fortress wall, which follows the topography of Paldalsan Mountain, and the buildings on the wall made of stone and brick, such as Ongseong, Jeokseong, Fortress, Water Gate, Gongsimdon, Jangdae, and Bongdon, are also beautiful. This is because none of them are made in the same shape, so you won’t feel bored while looking back. Haewoojae, the cradle of the toilet culture movement, and the Map Museum, which has the origin of Korea’s longitude and latitude, are also must-visit attractions in Suwon.
