Mui Elementary School, which closed in 1999, met artists such as sculptor Oh Sang-wook, Western painter Jeong Yeon-seo, and calligrapher Lee Cheon-seop and was transformed into Pyeongchang Mui Art Museum (hereinafter referred to as Mui Art Museum) in 2001. While preserving the original school structure, the school playground was transformed into a sculpture park and the classrooms were transformed into exhibition halls. Traces of Mui Elementary School’s days, such as the wooden hallway floor, blackboard, and zither, remain here and there, allowing you to fully enjoy the old rural school atmosphere while staying at the museum. You can enjoy exhibitions by artists who created Mui Art Museum and various planned exhibitions, and enjoy various cultural and artistic experience programs such as making pizza in a stone oven. There is also a two-story gallery café, which is a great place to take a break while taking in the view of the museum, and is famous for its Bongpyeong potato pizza. Mui Art Museum is open from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and the indoor exhibition hall is open until 6:00 p.m. It is closed on Wednesdays, but is open on public holidays, during peak seasons, and during the Pyeongchang Hyoseok Cultural Festival. Admission is 5,000 won for those aged 5 to 64, 4,000 won for those aged 65 and older, and night admission (after 6 p.m.) is free.

Bongpyeong, where the Muui Art Museum is located, is the hometown of author Lee Hyo-seok and the main setting of his novel, When Buckwheat Flowers Bloom, and has many related tourist destinations. There is a literature museum introducing Lee Hyo-seok’s life and literary world, the Hyoseok Moonlight Hill right next door, and Bongpyeong Market (Bongpyeong Traditional Market) that also appears in the novel. Buckwheat flowers bloom in early September, and the Pyeongchang Hyoseok Cultural Festival (September 6-15, 2024) is held, doubling the fun. If you have time, continue your trip to the Balwangsan Millennium Jumok Forest Trail, which was selected as the ‘2023 Star of Korean Tourism.’
