Myeongju-dong, where the Gangneung University Dohobu government office is located, has been the center of administration and culture since the Goryeo Dynasty. At one time, Gangneung City Hall and Gangneung University Dohobu government offices were located side by side, but as the city hall moved and a downtown area was created elsewhere, the central role of Myeongju-dong disappeared. Myeongju-dong, which has been aging comfortably, is full of vitality by holding the Gangneung Coffee Festival, Myeongju Flea Market, and various concerts and performances while the Gangneung Cultural Foundation runs cultural spaces such as the Myungju Arts Center, Sunshine Museum, Myungju Sarangchae, and a small performance hall. The Myeongju-dong tour tours cultural spaces along quiet alleys, Gangneungdae Dohobu Government Office, which is the site of a guesthouse, and Imdang-dong Cathedral, a registered cultural property. After touring downtown Myeongju-dong, you can enjoy lunch and snacks at the bustling Jungang and Seongnam Markets, and walk along Namdaecheon Stream to Anmok Beach.
