The main materials of mother-of-pearl lacquerware are divided into mother-of-pearl and lacquerware. Among them, Wonju is the home of lacquerware that corresponds to lacquer. As for the lacquer material, Wonju is the best in Korea. The reason why the late Ilsa Kim Bong-ryong moved his workshop to Wonju was because of the good lacquer. Now, only his disciple Hyung Lee inherits the 10th Important Intangible Cultural Property of Najeonjang. After meeting Hyung Lee, Jang Jeon learned mother-of-pearl from artisan Kim Bong-ryong. Mother-of-pearl lacquerware is divided into jeumjil and cutneumjil depending on the technique, and Lee Hyeong-man, following Kim Bong-ryong, makes it with jumeumjil. Wonju is establishing itself as the mother of lacquer craft, including the hosting of the Korea Lacquer Craft Fair, centered on these mother-of-pearl crafts. You can appreciate the works of artisans at the Wonju Lacquer Culture Center, Wonju History Museum, and Lacquer Crafts Center, and you can also experience lacquer and mother-of-pearl lacquerware.
