Ganghwa Peace Observatory, a trip to the history of peace that touches your heart

The Ganghwa Peace Observatory, located at the northernmost tip of Ganghwa Island, is the place where you can see North Korea closest to you on the Korean Peninsula. The mountains, fields, and villages of North Korea are within reach, across the river-like sea where the waterways of the Han, Imjin, and Yeseong Rivers meet with the West Sea. On a clear day, Songaksan Mountain and Gaepunggun Field can be clearly seen without a telescope. It’s almost surprising that North Korea is so close. The disappearance of inter-Korean and North Korean broadcasts after the 2018 inter-Korean summit makes us realize the approaching era of peace. The calmly flowing water comforts the wounded years. Gyodongdo is a place where residents of Hwanghae-do, who fled during the Korean War, settled down and lived without being blocked by the division. The pain of the displaced people is deeply buried in the village that reminds us of the past and Daeryong Market, which reproduces Yeonbaek Market in Hwanghae-do. Ganghwado Island is not only a peaceful travel destination, but also a place of history and culture with so much to see and learn that it is called a ‘roofless museum’. There are many historical attractions, including the Bucheon-ri dolmens listed as World Heritage sites, Ganghwa Cathedral, and Yongheunggung Palace.
