Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP)

Curator's Guide & Overview
Comprehensive Guide1. Architectural Feat: Zaha Hadid's Fluid Urban Landscape
Inaugurated in 2014 on the grounds of the former Dongdaemun Stadium, DDP was designed by Pritzker Prize laureate Zaha Hadid around the concept of a 'Metonymic Landscape'. Void of standard rectangular columns, the colossal curving structure seamlessly blends interior exhibition pathways, landscaped walkable rooftops, and flowing pedestrian plazas.
2. Bridging 600 Years of Heritage & Digital Innovation
Beneath its futuristic metallic shell, DDP thoughtfully preserves excavated historical treasures, including parts of the 14th-century Seoul City Wall (Hanyangdoseong) and Joseon-era military workshops. The complex encompasses the Art Hall, Museum Hall, and Design Lab, staging prestigious creative symposiums and interactive multimedia retrospectives.
3. Vibrant Nightlife Synergy & Transit Info
Flanked by 24-hour multi-story fashion wholesale districts and night shopping emporiums, DDP comes alive after dark with striking ambient lighting and kinetic public installations. Directly accessed via Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station (Subway Lines 2, 4, and 5, Exits 1 or 2).
