2019 is the year of the golden pig. The pig is known as a symbol of fertility, and because the character for pig money (豚) has the same sound as money (money), it also means wealth. In the new year, let’s go to Yanggu, the ‘center of the country’ where the energy of the golden pig dwells. The coastal area, famous for its punch bowl basin, uses the Chinese character for pig (亥) in its place name. Originally, it was called Haean by using the Chinese character for sea (hae), but there is a legend that there were many snakes at the foot of the mountain inside the basin, so the snake disappeared when a pig was released and raised. On the coastal side, go up to the Eulji Observatory to see the Punchbowl Basin and Mt. Seorak and Mt. Geumgang in the distance. A sculpture with a message of world peace and reconciliation, ‘Greetingman’ and the Yanggu War Memorial are also located on the seashore. If you carefully look around Yanggu’s attractions, such as the Park Soo-geun Museum of Art, which is the pride of Yanggu, the National Territory Center Store where you can receive energy from the navel of the Korean Peninsula, and the National Astronomical Observatory, which observes celestial bodies in the center of Korea, it is a good first trip for the new year.
