Meet culture at Oil Tank Oil Depot, Mapo Oil Tank Culture Park

In 2002, the Seoul World Cup Stadium was full of heat and shouts. However, the huge industrial facility built at the foot of Maebongsan Mountain to the west of the stadium was closed in preparation for the Korea-Japan World Cup. The Mapo oil stockpiling base, built between 1976 and 1978, was abandoned after being closed, but was reborn as a ‘cultural oil storage base’ in 2017. Oil storage tank facilities (T1 to T5) have become art spaces for exhibitions and performances, and Mapo Oil Reserve Base, including T3, where the original tank remains intact, have been designated as Seoul Future Heritage. T6, which is made of iron plates that were removed when T1 and T2 were dismantled, is a community center equipped with a cafe, lecture room, conference room, and ecological library ‘Eco Lounge’. The Oil Tank Culture Park is an ecological and cultural park in the city where the past and the present coexist and history and culture are harmonized. Oil Tank Culture Park’s indoor space is open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm (closed on Mondays), and the outdoor park is open at all times. The Seoul Mountain Culture Experience Center in Noeul Park in Sangam-dong is a place where you can learn about Korean mountain culture and history and enjoy rock climbing. Adventure experiences are popular. Gyeongui Line Forest Road and Yanghwajin Foreign Missionary Cemetery have quite different atmospheres, but it is appropriate to take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the atmosphere of early winter.
