Yeomgeundang, the main building of the Joseon royal family, moved to a new site in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi-do after giving away a site for a dormitory at Sungkyunkwan University in Myeongryun-dong, Seoul. During the dismantling of the house to move it, Sangnyangmun, which was said to be the house of ‘Lee Geun’, the grandson of Emperor Gojong, was discovered. Standing tall on a high podium, Yeomgeundang catches the eye with its straight pillars and rafters, which are hard to find in ordinary houses. The materials with no cracks or ruptures anywhere are all well-dried Geumgang pine, which is used when building palaces. There is an outbuilding, Jaeunjeong, at the back of Yeomgeundang, where the numaru overlooking the Yeoncheon Plain is harmonized with the impressive Sabanjeong to complete the ‘ㅁ’-shaped yard. All of them were reborn as a place for healing by filling the walls and floors with ocher.
