Hangwa Village in Nodong-ri (Galgol), Sacheon-myeon, Gangneung-si is famous for producing sanja and gangjeong, which are fried in oil among various Korean snacks. Currently, about 60 households are making traditional Korean sweets, and at the center of them is Master Bong-Seok Choi (71 years old), who was designated as the first traditional food master (No. 23) in the traditional Korean snack field in 2000. In the 1870s, Myeongin Choi’s 4th-generation grandfather systematized the Korean traditional snack recipe, and the fifth generation inherited the family’s own secret recipe. Master Choi’s sanja and gangjeong, which are made by hand using domestic ingredients, boast a luxurious taste and soft texture. There is also a ‘Galgol Hangwa Experience Exhibition Center’ with an exhibition hall and an experience center near the manufacturing site.
